Environmental News - Carbon price is essential but on its own it is not enough


British businesses are committed to doing what it takes to tackle climate change but the UK effort will only succeed if it becomes an urgent, shared national priority for companies, consumers and the government, a new report from the CBI shows.

Eighteen chairmen and chief executives from every area of British business, led by BT Chief Executive Ben Verwaayen, have spent 10 months assessing the challenge of climate change and how to tackle it. The UK's carbon reduction targets for 2020 are likely to be missed but its 2050 goals are achievable if a greater sense of urgency is now adopted.

In Climate Change: Everyone's Business, Task Force members pledge to adapt their businesses for the new low carbon world, including a promise to develop new products and services to empower households to halve their emissions by 2020; and a commitment to work with their 2m employees to achieve major cuts in their emissions both at work and at home.
