WEEE Data starts to emerge
As the implementation of the WEEE Regulations begins to gather pace, some data is starting to emerge. The Environment Agency has reported information on the Distributor Takeback Scheme (DTS) and Designated Collection Facility (DCF) registration. 2,400 retailers and 1,153 DCFs have registered with the DTS. The latter includes:
• 927 civic amenity sites,
• 53 commercial sites,
• 12 charity/community sites,
• 9 retail distribution platforms and 148 waste transfer stations.
300 more registrations are in the pipeline.
The DTI has also published 3 letters containing further guidance for retailers, producer compliance schemes and disposal authorities. Retailers, in particular, are advised to read the relevant letter.
The three letters can be found at

It is thought that 5 schemes have the majority of the B2C market share, registering approximately 3000 producers. Producer registrations between the larger schemes are split approximately as follows: Repic - 55%, ERP - 14%, Valpak - 14%, DHL - 10%, Transform - 7%. However, the figures are at present estimates and no official data is currently available.

As the July deadline approaches, there seems to be little rush from Local Authorities to establish relationships with Producer Compliance Schemes. Many authorities are currently entering into lengthy tendering processes with little prospect of completion within the next 6 weeks.
