Landmark art work to replace Tinsley cooling towers

E.ON UK, the company that owns the Tinsley cooling towers, has announced that the 70-year-old towers that stand next to the M1 viaduct will be demolished later this year. They will be replaced with 'a large-scale, permanent piece of art that will symbolise the importance of energy.' E.ON will be contributing £500,000 towards this project and other sources of funding will be sought.

E.ON has also announced proposals to develop a new biomass plant that would burn recycled wood and provide enough power for 40,000 houses and provide 25 full time jobs, subject to the usual planning application process. An application is anticipated later this year.
