Environmental policies give companies competitive advantage

Organisations with solid environmental policies are gaining competitive advantage over other businesses, according to the Chartered Institute of Professional Development (CIPD).
Its quarterly survey reveals that 58% of businesses feel that environmental policies have become more important to their organisation’s strategy and an average of 44% of organisations have an environmental policy in place.
The production and manufacturing sector has the greatest number of policies in place with 67% of businesses currently operating an environmental policy and an further 32% inteding to implement a policy within the next 12 months.
The CIPD found that 91% of businesses encourage recycling and 83% promote energy saving. While this reflects the cost and efficiency benefits many businesses have benefitted from over the last decade, with further benefits are now emerging. The Institute found that 47% of HR professionals believe that employees prefer to work for firms with a strong green stance, with 46% saying it helps to attract potential recruits.
Transport was found to be the area where UK businesses are most reluctant to take action. 56% of businesses thought that they could do more to reduce their travel impacts.
The survey also revealed that 37% of businesses aim to achieve carbon-neutral status in future.
